The Shellbrook Library is sponsoring a Creative Writer's Workshop presented by local contemporary and cowboy poet Laurie Lynn Muirhead in November. Muirhead is a published writer and entertainer and has performed at events like Shellbrook's Centennial celebration "Seasons Come and Seasons Go."
During the all day session of the workshop on Saturday November 20th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Muirhead will cover how to get started, writing genres, finding the right market, and quick and easy writing exercises. At the workshop's evening session on Saturday November 27th from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm, Muirhead will address the art of critiquing and creating a successful writing group.
Muirhead explains, "Everyone has their own story. That story matters and will speak to someone else. A good writing group will keep writers going. They are much needed cheerleaders and critics."
In the words of poet Linda Monahan, "So who can write? You can write. Write to tell the truth; write to tell the truth; write to know who you are; write to save the world; write to save yourself. Write so that when you look back and see that moment when you were totally clear, completely brilliant, and astoundingly wise, there is proof—proof right there on the page and you can read your words and say 'I wrote that' and if you did it once—you can do it again." A writing group can sustain this.
There are only ten spots available for registration so submit your name to Librarian Alanna Carswell before November 17th. A small fee of $5.00 is being charged for the Creative Writer's Workshop. Lunch will be provided on November 20th, the all day session, and refreshments on November 27th, the evening session.
